Brussels cartoonist wins Golden Hat

Flemish illustrator and graphic artist Dieter Bevers has won the Cartoon Festival's Gouden Hoed this year for his one-panel cartoon "Panda Kiss"

"Panda Kiss" an amusing reminder of generation gap

Knokke-Heist’s Cartoon Festival has awarded this year’s Gouden Hoed (Golden Hat) for the best cartoon to Flemish cartoonist Dieter Bevers. The Brussels-area cartoonist, who works as a illustrator and graphic designer for Belfius won for his cartoon “Kiss Panda” (pictured). The cartoon, which shows panda parents perplexed at the behavior of their young, “presents us with a simple, fresh joke about the generation gap,” said the jury.

The jury chose the cartoon from nearly 1,400 submitted to the festival. The Silver Hat, meanwhile, was awarded to Iranian cartoonist Mohammadreza Babaei, and the Bronze Hat went to Turkish cartoonist Kiliçaslan Musa. The cartoons, and hundreds more, can be seen at this year’s festival, which runs from 13 July to 14 September.
