Summary

Long-time editor and cultural commentator Guy Mortier has won the Flemish region's annual Culture Prize for Overall Cultural Service

Winner was editor of Humo for 34 years

Journalist and TV figure Guy Mortier has won the Flemish Culture Prize for Overall Cultural Service last week. Flanders’ culture minister Joke Schauvliege handed Mortier the prize as the closing event of the Culture Forum 2020. Mortier started out as a journalist at Humo in the 1960s specialising in rock music reviews and profiles and became the magazine’s editor in chief in 1969, staying in the position for 34 years. He was instrumental in launching the now hugel influential Humo’s Rock Rally.

Mortier has since been active as a radio and TV commentator in music and other areas of the arts. He “knew no limits,” said Schauvliege, awarding the prize. “Using language and a sharp wit, he moulded generations of young critics, offering golden opportunities to an army of talent-rich journalists, writers, photographers, artists and illustrators.”
