Opera Vlaanderen nominated for two International Opera Awards

Summary

Both Brussels’ and Flanders’ regional operas have been nominated for Best Opera House and other categories by the International Opera Awards in London

Best Opera House

Both Opera Vlaanderen, Flanders’ regional opera, and Brussels opera house De Munt have been nominated by the International Opera Awards in the coveted category of Best Opera House. The category focuses not on a specific production but on an opera company’s work over the last entire season.

The awards are organised by London’s Opera magazine, and Opera Vlaanderen was also nominated for the same award last year. A first, however, is a nomination for Opera Vlaanderen’s choir for Best Choir. Several artists with whom the opera worked over the last year have also been nominated, including directors David Alden, who helmed Khovansjtsjina (pictured), and Calixto Bieito, director of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.

The company’s choir were central to both those productions. “The nomination is a feather in the cap for our choir and recognition of the work of recent years under choirmaster Yannis Pouspourikas and now our new choir leader Jan Schweiger,” said Opera Vlaanderen general director Aviel Cahn. “That several artists with whom we work are also nominated shows our continued reputation for creativity and innovation in the international opera world.”

De Munt, meanwhile, was also nominated for Best Richard Strauss Anniversary Production with Daphne, for Best World Premiere with Au Monde and for Best Opera DVD with their production of Lulu.

The winners will be announced on 26 April in London’s Savoy Hotel.
