Belgians cross border for groceries

“Half of Belgians live within 50 kilometres of a national border,” Comeos director Dominique Michel said. “Dutch and French supermarkets have a comparative advantage due to high labour costs and all kinds of taxes in Belgium. They actively target the Belgian consumer, advertising as far as in Brussels. Cross-border spending has increased 10% over the last three years. Belgian households today spend no less than 3.5% of their income abroad.”
