Animal rights organisation Gaia has reached an
agreement with the Boerenbond, or Farmer’s
Union, and its Walloon counterpart to stop
keeping farmed rabbits in
battery cages. From 2016, all
rabbits must be kept in a “park
system” (pictured) where
they have more freedom to
move around, though still
being kept indoors. “This
should improve the welfare
of rabbits considerably,” said
Michel Vandenbosche of
Gaia.
Boerenbond called for the
retail sector to help make sure
that Belgian farmers would
not be put at a competitive
disadvantage as a result
of higher farming costs.
Representatives of Colruyt
and Delhaize have promised to
help. Agriculture minister Kris Peeters promised
to propose a 28% subsidy for the installation of
the park system.
