Road works can be particularly hard on small retail businesses, as customers are prevented from normal access, especially by car. In some cases, the disruption can be a fatal blow to businesses that are already struggling through the current crisis.
In 2007, the government introduced a new law allowing for compensation for businesses that suffer because of road works. However, a recent survey showed that 70% of business owners think the measure, which provides compensation of €70 per day, is not sufficient. Small businesses are now calling for a local moratorium on further works in areas where works have recently been carried out.
