Summary

A van crashed on the Brussels ring road early yesterday morning, injuring its 15 occupants and leading to a chaotic commute

Driver is minor

A van carrying 15 people crashed and overturned on the Brussels ring road early yesterday morning after a police chase. The driver, a minor, has been held on suspicion of human trafficking, the prosecutor’s office has confirmed.

Five of the occupants of the vehicle were seriously hurt when it overturned just before the Vilvoorde viaduct. The traffic on the ring road was disrupted for hours as a result.

The van was first spotted at about 3.00 driving the wrong way on the motorway in the area of Nivelle. The vehicle, with a German license plate, then made a U-turn in the direction of Brussels. Police tried to stop the vehicle, and a chase ensured.

The 14 occupants other than the driver included two children, both of whom were taken to hospital. They are, along with three adults, in critical condition, said police.

None of the occupants was in Belgium legally, and the Service for Foreigners has been brought in. The driver had no papers and is in the process of being identified.
