Lukaku smashes transfer record for Belgian footballer

Summary

Antwerp-born Romelu Lukaku may be the most expensive footballer in the world as Manchester United pay nearly €85 million to Everton

Pre-season tour in US

Romelu Lukaku has broken the transfer record for a Belgian footballer, after Manchester United agreed to pay Everton £75 million (€84.75 million) for the player. Lukaku has signed a five-year contract with United.

If add-ons and options are included, the 24-year-old could be the most expensive player in the world. Lukaku has been on holiday in the US and linked up there with United’s squad for their pre-season tour.

Originally from Antwerp, the striker has been a sensation at Everton, where he scored 68 Premier League goals in five years, scoring 25 times last season. He is a key part of the Belgian national team, the Red Devils – which also happens to be United’s nickname.

Lukaku (pictured) will join fellow Belgians Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj in the squad.

Lukaku was first spotted as a boy at Antwerp side Rupel Boom and played in the KFC Wintam and Lierse youth sides before joining Anderlecht, where he played his first senior game at just 16. He moved to Chelsea when he was 18, when the club was managed by current Manchester United coach José Mourinho.
