Seven arrested in Brussels raids

Summary

Police detained six people after a late-night swoop in three areas of the capital, with another man arrested later in Vorst

Gunpoint searches

Six people were arrested during a police operation at around midnight in Schaarbeek, Jette and Brussels-City. Three of those detained were parked in a car outside the offices of the federal prosecutor in Brussels. They were questioned, but it is not yet clear why they were there.

Two others were arrested in Jette and one in Brussels-City. There were also searches carried out in Schaarbeek during which the occupants of one house were ordered on to the street at gunpoint, but no one was arrested.

Witnesses claimed on social media to have heard an explosion, but that has not been confirmed by official sources. The bomb disposal unit Dovo was present, however. News agency Belga reported a security perimeter centred on a house at 20 Paviljoenstraat in Schaarbeek. Some people living in the area were unable to reach their homes until after 1.00. Police had one car towed away.

This morning, another man was arrested in Vorst. No details were given. The federal prosecutor is expected to give more information on the operation later today.
