Eric Jacquemyn, the managing director of Technopolis, the hands-on science centre in Mechelen, has agreed to step down in an agreement with the board of directors, after months of dispute involving other members of staff. He takes leave of his post on 1 March, the board said in a statement.

Jacquemyn’s position was in question for the last year, after an external audit said there were problems with management culture and financial transparency at the centre. Members of staff wrote an open letter calling for him to be dismissed, complaining that some of their number were suffering from burnout, while others had been ordered by Jacquemyn to carry out personal errands for him.

Last year the board appointed Ingrid Letellier as director ad interim while the dispute continued. After the latest decision, she will continue in that role until a permanent replacement can be found.

Flemish economy minister Philippe Muyters had suspended the centre’s working subsidy of €4.2 million while allegations of financial mismanagement were investigated. This week he issued a statement following the board’s announcement: “This decision brings an end to a turbulent period for the staff and the institution. I hope Technopolis can make a fresh start in the coming months, with a firm focus on its basic function: bringing children and young people in contact with science and technology in a creative manner.”
