Work starts on new Hasselt campus
Flemish investment minister Ingrid Lieten recently joined Limburg governor Herman Reynders and Hasselt mayor Hilde Claes to officially lay the first stone in the construction of new university buildings in Hasselt, on the site of the former prison on the Martelarenlaan.
Construction includes new buildings but also the complete renovation of the 19th-century prison, keeping as many elements of the original structure as possible. The city also organised a neighbourhood party with drinks and music.
“The university is maintaining close contact with local people during and after the construction because we know that the building of a new university campus will cause a lot of changes,” said university spokeswoman Ingrid Vrancken. The new campus will be home to the law faculty, a rectorate and the post-academic education department.
