There's a downside to everything. Take being a student: for many, it's the first time away from home surrounded by thousands of people your own age and no school teachers telling you what to do but only distant lecturers. And the freedom to study when you like. But there's the rub. You've managed to attend enough lectures, but looming ahead are the exams.

My daily paper is becoming more and more like a Russian doll: you think you’ve separated out the sections but, lo and behold, yet another supplement falls out. This weekend it was the other way round: I thought I was reading the paper only to find the “real” paper was inside een bijlage – a supplement.

Sometimes you don’t know what to believe. Until recently, eggs were to be treated like health grenades: eat more than two a week, and you were asking for trouble. Now the boffins tell us that eggs have little effect on your cholesterol. Shake iodised salt on your fish, and it’s goodbye Mr Chips. But crunch sea salt on your fries, and you will be freed from most of life’s ills.

Winter is beginning to drag a bit, so many minds are turning to the summer and holiday plans. What with the global bruising of recent months, the prospect of a holiday certainly lifts the spirits. I’ve just been glancing through the paper to see what’s on offer. Let’s start close to home. What about two weeks at the Belgian coast: Knokke, zeer mooi appt – very nice apartment, 2slpk – 2 bedrooms, sounds fine, alle comf (wasmachine, droogkast) – all comforts (washing machine, tumble dryer): sounds like home away from home, no thank you.
