Antwerp school adds course to help fill vacancies at port

Summary

Antwerp’s royal Athenaeum has added a new transport and logistics course to help make young people more employable and fill the large number of vacancies at the port

Two birds, one stone

The Royal Athenaeum in Antwerp is adding a course programme on International Transport and Logistics to tackle two local problems: A large number of vacancies at the port and a high youth unemployment rate.

The secondary school’s programme, which starts on 1 February, is the result of a collaboration with the AP University College, job and education contact point Talentenstroom, training fund Logos and the Centre for Adult Education in Antwerp.

The new course of study is meant for new secondary school graduates as well as students already enrolled in higher education looking to change disciplines and young adults in general with a strong interest in the port sector. “We provide workplace-learning with internships of eight weeks,” the director of the Athenaeum, Karin Heremans, told deredactie.be. “We are also supported by a group of enterprises.”

After one year of study, students can become logistics officers or work in customs. They can also continue their studies, leading to a Bachelor’s degree in logistics management.
