The Antwerp provincial culinary school PIVA has won a gold medal at the Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg, considered in the industry as the second most important competition in the world, after the Culinary Olympics in Germany.

The gold medal went to pastry chef Jorgen Baert in the category Artistic Pastry. Kris Van Rysselberghe, also a pastry chef, won bronze for Pastry Art, while chef Luc Godon also won bronze for Culinary Art. In addition, the catering team took home bronze for its dinner for 150 on a theme of Europe Meets Asia.

This year saw more than 1,000 participants in the Culinary World Cup, from 105 countries across five continents. Participating nations sent teams in the categories senior, junior, military, regional and catering, as well as individual participants. PIVA took part with its catering team and individuals.

In related news, the School for Butlers and Hospitality in Brussels has been granted City & Guilds recognition in London. C&G offers qualifications in all sectors of industry through 8,500 colleges and schools in 81 countries. Two million people begin City & Guilds courses every year, from basic level to doctorates.

“This recognition puts us on the same level as the butlers of the royal houses,” said the school’s director, Vincent Vermeulen. “Until recently, butler schools were not recognised, but, thanks to the hard work of our team, that has now changed.”
