Extra computers in schools not used sufficiently
Although primary and secondary schools in Flanders have sufficient access to computers, teachers are not integrating them enough into lessons plans
Teachers need more ICT training to integrate computers in lessons
There is about one computer available per six students in primary education, while in secondary school, a computer is available for every two students. However, much of this technology is more than four years old – in primary and special education this accounts for more than half of the equipment.
In secondary education, one in three teachers regularly uses a computer during lessons, compared to half of the teachers in primary education. But 13% of the teachers in secondary education never uses a computer in class. Johan Van Braak of the University of Ghent’s department of educational studies says that ICT co-ordinators should offer more help in the way of integrating computers into lessons, rather than just the technical assistance they offer now.
