Summary

Universities in Ghent and Leuven have once again made the QS World University Rankings by Subject, with KU Leuven pulling down 11 places in the top 50

Plaudits for dentistry and veterinary sciences

Fourteen programmes at Flemish universities have made the top 50 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. The sixth edition of the QS rankings, released yesterday, features 42 disciplines – making it the largest-ever ranking of higher institution subjects in the world.

A top 50 was drawn up for each discipline. The programmes are judged on academic reputation, impact of research and reputation as an employer. The expert opinion of 76,798 academics and 44,426 employers informed the results, along with an analysis of 28.5 million research papers and more than 113 million citations sourced from a bibliometric database.

The University of Leuven (KU Leuven) is the strongest university in Flanders at the subject level, responsible for 11 of the region’s 14 finishes in the top 50. Its dentistry programme (pictured) made it into the top 10, at seventh place. The three other Flemish top rankings were taken by programmes at Ghent University. The best scoring there was veterinary sciences, in 20th place.

The result is an improvement compared to last year, when Flanders had 11 top 50 rankings: eight for the KU Leuven and three for UGent.

On a global level, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – both in the US –dominate, each taking 12 leading positions.
