No new university Bachelor or Master’s degrees

Summary

The consortium of Flemish universities has agreed to not develop new degree programmes until at least 2017 in response to the need to limit expenses in higher education

No added expense

There will be no new Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes launched at Flemish universities until at least 2017, according to a declaration by university rectors. The decision is a response to a request by education minister Hilde Crevits (pictured) and still has to be presented to parliament.

The universities have agreed not to develop new degree programmes until at least February 2017. The agreement does not concern projects that are already in development. For example, Hasselt University will, in collaboration with the University of Leuven, launch their new Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in business sciences soon.

Advanced Master’s degrees (known as Master after Master in Flanders), which are not financed with government support, can still be launched. This also applies to research Master’s degrees for applications that have already been submitted.

Although the agreement is part of the budget-cutting initiatives affecting Flemish higher education, it is not a direct saving measure. It does, however, ensure no extra expenses in the coming years.

Annabella GrikkThat's a shame. I wanted to apply for master degree at University of Antwerp but unfrotunately I didn't find a program that suits my requirements. Actually, I hoped new programs will have something more to bring to the table but since there is none, I have to think of other options. Since my major is pretty unusual. but not as ones mentioned by the dissertation writer but still I wanted to take part in an interesting program.
