Three primary teachers from Ghent are the recipients of this year’s Queen Paola Prize for education. The award ceremony took place on Wednesday at the greenhouses of the Royal Palace in Laken.

The awards are given to teachers from the three communities for concrete and original projects. This year, the focus was on pedagogical projects that make scientific courses more appealing to pupils and help them go into science and technology studies in higher education.

Ludwig De Smedt, Katrien D’Hoker and Luc Storm, who teach at the Klim primary school in Ghent, won the first prize for their “Electricity sets our life in motion” project. The project takes a hands-on approach to teaching pupils about electricity. The first prize is worth €6,500.

In related news, primary teacher from Kortenberg, Flemish Brabant, was named Teacher of the Year by the education platform Klasse. Christophe Laes teacher sixth grade at the Hertog Jan primary school.

In an online video, Laes’ students explain how he protects them against bullying, improves their self-confidence and challenges them through creative projects. They also say Laes comes up with innovative methods, like using GoPro cameras to teach them about traffic safety.
