Senator calls for obligatory first-aid courses at school
Resuscitation training should take place in primary and secondary education
Training will save lives
De Gucht has proposed a resolution in the Flemish Parliament to make first-aid training compulsory in the first, second and third grade of primary and secondary education. With Red Cross Flanders and the Belgian Resuscitation Council, lessons in resuscitation techniques should be worked out and teachers should be able to follow free courses. “The biennial training can save many lives as people will dare to act more quickly if they have the necessary knowledge,” said De Gucht.
The Belgian Cardiologic League last weekend launched its new campaign, called Durf redden (Dare to Save), to encourage people not to hesitate to help if they see someone having a heart attack. Flanders minister-president Kris Peeters kicked off the campaign by testifying about his own inability to help a victim after an accident last year, which led him to follow a course.
