Teaching interns matched with schools on new platform

Summary

A new online service matches teaching students with internships based on a number of criteria, which solves a long-term problem

One stop for new teachers

Education minister Hilde Crevits has announced the creation of the digital platform lerarenstage.be to help students in teaching studies find internships. The site brings secondary schools together with teaching studies in higher education.

Internship requests are submitted via the teaching studies department. On the basis of certain criteria chosen by the applicant, the system suggests internships in schools in Flanders and Brussels.

After the start-up phase, the website will be further expanded with extra tools and options. In the future, other education departments could be added to the system. The government has invested €224,000 in the platform.

Until now there was no central database for candidate teachers to find internships. Systems and arrangements differed depending on the area or education network and were often not transparent, said Crevits.

“We are providing the education sector with a solution to a chronic problem,” said Crevits in a statement. “Internships are an important part of teaching studies, as future teachers need to get classroom experience.”

Educational system

The Flemish educational system is divided into two levels: primary (age six to 12) and secondary school (12 to 18). Education is compulsory for children between the ages of six and 18.
Types - There are three educational networks in Flanders: the Flemish Community’s GO! network, and publicly funded education – either publicly or privately run.
Not enough space - In recent years, Flemish schools have been struggling with persistent teacher shortages and a growing lack of school spaces.
No tuition fees - Nursery, primary and secondary school are free in Flanders.
