According to a jury of international experts, Ghent University (UGent) is doing an excellent job of removing eliminating barriers to higher education. The university has won the Institutional Award for Innovation in Internationalisation for its innovative approach in removing geographic borders to higher education for students across Europe.

The award spotlights universities that have taken an innovative approach to internationalising higher education and is given out by the European Association for International Education, an Amsterdam-based non-profit that aims to advance international higher education. The prize will be handed over to UGent during the association’s annual conference in two weeks in Seville, Spain.

UGent’s involvement in the development of the European credit transfer system was noted by the awards jury, as was the establishment of a slew of international master’s degrees jointly awarded by UGent and universities abroad. It also pointed to the university’s strategic partnerships across a variety of subjects.

In a statement, the university noted that 22% of its students have spent time studying abroad as part of their programme by the time they graduate.
