Veterinarian association wants entrance exam for students
The Flemish Veterinarians Association wants government and universities to stem the tide of graduates in the sector
Saturation of the job market
According to the association, too many students of veterinarian studies graduate each year, making it impossible for many of them to find work. Its figures show that one out of three young veterinarians leaves the profession after five years. In addition, the surplus on the job market could also endanger the quality of the service, the association says, because some young vets receive insufficient practical experience.
The association points out that there is also a large influx of vet students from the Netherlands, who could not begin studies in their home country because of a lottery system. The veterinarians are calling on the governments, universities and policy organisations to discuss whether a non-binding entrance exam in Belgium is an acceptable and feasible solution.
