VUB to launch International Football Business Institute

Summary

A new VUB postgraduate course aims to prepare students for a career in the international football industry

Unique in the world

The Free University of Brussels (VUB) is launching the International Football Business Institute (IFBI) this autumn to prepare future executives to work in the football industry. Belgium’s Red Devils are currently number two in the Fifa ranking, making Belgium a strategic place to launch the only institution of its kind in the world.

Applications are now being accepted from students who already have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. The one-year programme will be offered in English. Renowned international football professionals such as Grant Downie, head of performance at Manchester City, and Peter Willems, head of marketing and sponsorship at the Union of European Football Associations, will teach students the ins and outs of the industry.

“Our students can count on the best guidance, and they will be trained by some of the biggest names in the international football business,” said Jos Verschueren, director of VUB’s Sports Management department and the founder of IFBI.

Students will also get out of the classroom, with visits to famous stadiums, clubs, matches and conventions. The programme will provide meals and even a tailored suit for every participant.

“We offer a course at Champions League level course that will place future football executives at the kick-off of an exciting career in the football business,” said Verschueren. “At the same time, we’re striving for more transparent management in tomorrow’s football.”

All that expertise doesn't come cheap, however: The cost for the year-long programme is €40,000.

The VUB was established as a spin-off of the French-speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles in the 1960s. It’s an internationally oriented and liberal institution, and the only Dutch-speaking university in the capital.
Work - The VUB is the largest Dutch-speaking employer of the Brussels-Capital Region.
St V - Every year, students honour university founder Pierre Theodore Verhaegen in a festive, booze-filled “St V” march through the city.
Campus - The VUB is the only Dutch-speaking university with a small, American-style green campus.
