VUB starts academic year with “sustainable procession”

Summary

The Free University of Brussels (VUB) marched and took sustainable transport to Bozar yesterday, where it held its opening ceremony

University first

For the first time in its history, the Free University of Brussels (VUB) organised a procession to the centre of Brussels for the opening of its academic year. The opening ceremony was held at fine arts centre Bozar.

After starting off from the VUB campuses in Etterbeek and Jette, the procession of students, professors and rector Paul De Knop went with six buses, 200 bikes and a few electric cars to the centre. By using eco-friendly transport, VUB highlighted its “sustainable bond” with the city, it said. VUB praised Brussels’ international reputation, networks, multilingualism, global economy and diversity.

In his opening speech, De Knop was positive about the future. “We started extensive construction works on the campuses but are also laying the foundations to prepare the university further for the digital era,” he said.

De Knop declared that it’s essential to contribute to a “collaborative society where no one is excluded”. VUB is, therefore, expanding its network with citizens, policymakers, social organisations and companies.

There was also criticism on the government’s budget cuts in education from the education unions and the rector. “The government is increasingly reducing its financial support,” said De Knop. “This is painful but also provides chances for universities to set up more collaborations.”

De Knop also noted that a separate rectorate will be established for innovation: the Knowledge and Transfer Interface.

Free University of Brussels (VUB)

The VUB was established as a spin-off of the French-speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles in the 1960s. It’s an internationally oriented and liberal institution, and the only Dutch-speaking university in the capital.
Work - The VUB is the largest Dutch-speaking employer of the Brussels-Capital Region.
St V - Every year, students honour university founder Pierre Theodore Verhaegen in a festive, booze-filled “St V” march through the city.
Campus - The VUB is the only Dutch-speaking university with a small, American-style green campus.
