The Free University of Brussels has issued an election memorandum to the next government asking for money for a new library, more classes in English and the introduction of a minister of student affairs

Dutch-speaking institute in international city

The Free University of Brussels (VUB) has asked the next government for the possibility to organise more courses in English, a budget for a new library and learning centre and the introduction of a minister of student affairs.

In an election memorandum, rector Paul De Knop (pictured) asked that the next government take into account the institution’s special position as a Dutch-speaking university in an international city. It is requesting more flexible language regulations, the opportunity to organise more courses in English in co-operation with other universities and the possibility to more easily award double diplomas. It has also called for the introduction of a minister of student affairs, who would co-ordinate issues such as student rooms, public transport to campuses and discounts for students.

The VUB is also asking for financial support for its planned library and learning centre. The centre, which the VUB would build and use in collaboration with its French-speaking counterpart ULB , would be both a study and a meeting space and be open to use for activities with the business world. VUB is also asking for financial aid for the renovation of its swimming pool and extra investment in the University Hospital of Jette.

Free University of Brussels (VUB)

The VUB was established as a spin-off of the French-speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles in the 1960s. It’s an internationally oriented and liberal institution, and the only Dutch-speaking university in the capital.
Work - The VUB is the largest Dutch-speaking employer of the Brussels-Capital Region.
St V - Every year, students honour university founder Pierre Theodore Verhaegen in a festive, booze-filled “St V” march through the city.
Campus - The VUB is the only Dutch-speaking university with a small, American-style green campus.
