Women equal men in post-doc research for first time

Summary

For the first time in Flemish universities, there is an equal number of women as men holding post-doctoral positions

‘Efforts are paying off’

The gender gap in research in Flanders appears to be slowly diminishing, according to new figures from the Flemish Interuniversity Council (Vlir). During the 2016-2017 academic year, there were just as many female as male post-doctorate researchers, for the first time ever.

“Considering that an academic career can last up to 40 years, this is a very positive evolution,” Vlir policy advisor Els Titeca told De Tijd. “The efforts of administrators are paying off.”

Though women outnumber men at the bachelor, graduate and PhD levels in Flanders, they are sorely under-represented at the highest echelons, with just 14% of full professors women, according to figures reported by the paper.

The University of Leuven, the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and Ghent University have all launched gender action plans to see more women take up new appointments and to have more gender-balanced representation of staff at all administrative bodies and commissions.

Former Flemish innovation minister Ingrid Lieten and education minister Pascal Smet introduced the gender action plan requirement for Flemish universities in 2013.
