FC De Kampioenen to return with new season

Summary

Fans of the beloved Flemish sitcom rejoiced in unison this week, when it was announced that FC De Kampionen would be back for eight episodes in 2021

‘We never let go of each other’

The long-running television comedy FC De Kampioenen, which bowed out in 2011 after 21 seasons, is making a comeback. The cast announced on the evening talk show Vandaag that eight new episodes would be made.

FC De Kampioenen ran on channel Eén from 1990 to 2011. The 30-minute episodes employed broad comedy and slapstick centred around the members of a local football club. The club canteen, management and antiques shop next door provided more characters.

The sitcom’s appeal to all ages kept it popular for 21 years until it finally called it a day eight years ago. Well, sort of – four FC De Kampioenen films have been made since.

But now the beloved programme will return to Eén for eight new episodes. Fans will have to wait some time, however; writing has yet to start, and shooting won’t begin until next year. The episodes are not expected to air until 2021.

“We constantly get the question from fans why we make new episodes,” said Herman Verbruggen, who plays terrible footballer and jack-of-all-trades Marc (or Marcske) in the series. “I wanted to find an answer to that myself, so I spoke to other members of the cast and to the network manager at Eén.”

It turned out that everyone found it a good idea. “I sent an email to the entire cast, and I had enthusiastic answers back from all of them within the hour.”

“We never let go of each other,” said Tuur De Weert, who plays handyman/aristocrat Maurice, “but the public has never let go of De Kampioenen either. “Now we can bring all of us back together.”
