App to help empty port containers get back to owners

Summary

An Antwerp start-up’s new app will assist transporters in getting their empty cargo containers back while avoiding the city’s notorious traffic

Rebate to avoid ring road

An Antwerp start-up, working with the city’s mobility platform Slim naar Antwerpen, has launched a new app to help manage the transport of empty cargo containers. The app, DepotX, also includes a cash-back option for transporters.

Avantida aims to develop transport apps that help save costly kilometres and harmful carbon dioxide emissions. DepotX is designed to help transport companies select the best option for the return of their containers that have been used for the transport of freight.

In some cases, that means going back to the port area. In others, a more convenient pick-up point will be a better option. DepotX also helps users choose transport routes during times least likely to cause unnecessary emissions or road congestion.

Because of a €50,000 contribution from the city of Antwerp, the app also offers a discount of 30%, up to a value of €30, for any return transport that avoids certain areas of Antwerp, including the busy ring road. The target is to keep up to 5,000 empty containers away from the city’s roads.

“Through this initiative, we are extending our offer of smart mobility services in order to achieve a sustainable reduction in congestion and a structural change in behaviour,” said Koen Kennis, city councillor for mobility. “DepotX is an efficient mobility and logistics solution to help take container transports out of traffic. We hope many transporters will make use of the cash-back option to help reduce congestion in the Antwerp area.”
