Platform to help retailers create a better shopping experience
UHasselt’s new Retail Design Lab can be consulted by both students and professionals for help on how to design a shop to appeal to customers
Emotional response
Studies have shown that many factors, including the use of certain materials and lighting, have an impact on customer mood and behaviour. The centre will assemble expertise and data from around the world that can be useful to develop a more experience-oriented shop.
Retail Design Lab also offers education programmes for both students and professionals. A DIY Fashion Store Audit maps the shopping experience through a questionnaire. Visitors can also find concrete cases and “tips and tricks” concerning retail and retail design.
Designers and retailers can ask experts for advice or for assistance during the design process. The lab’s team is available to provide expertise concerning design, marketing, communication, psychology and trendwatching.
“Designing for the retail sector requires a multidisciplinary approach in which the focus lies on how the client experiences the spatial environment,” said Katelijn Quartier, the lab’s academic director. “Experts thus have to keep in mind consumers’ perceptions, behaviour and emotions.”
