Smart mirror shows front and back view at same time
Two Flemish SMEs have presented their innovative mirror at Kortrijk’s Biennale Interieur
Double vision
Group De Keyzer and Deknudt Mirrors presented the ME2 Mirror at the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk. Leuven-based nanotechnology firm imec played an important role in its development.
The ME2 Mirror is integrated in a bathroom cabinet with two panels that each have a mirror on the inside. A camera in the left panel sends its images to a screen integrated in the other mirror. This way, both the front and the back view can be shown.
The project was initiated by furniture manufacturer Group De Keyzer from Menen and mirror specialist Deknudt Mirrors from Deerlijk, supported by imec.
Developing the mirror posed several challenges. The electronics had to be resistant to frequent use in very humid conditions, the camera had to deliver high-quality images under different lighting conditions and the complex system had to be integrated in a cost-efficient way.
“Companies don’t always have all the necessary expertise and intellectual property to convert their ideas into solid, cost-efficient products or to implement the best possible combination of advanced technologies,” explained Kris Hermus, programme manager for innovation at imec.
