Tanning beds need more monitoring, says cancer foundation

Summary

The Foundation Against Cancer has launched the Alliance for the Prevention of Skin Cancer to improve the monitoring of tanning salons

Inspection results should be posted

The Stichting tegen kanker (Foundation against Cancer) has launched the Alliance for the Prevention of Skin cancer, with demands for measures to improve the safety of tanning beds and centres. The foundation is reacting to the federal government’s recent announcement that in 2013, just as in previous years, only a small minority of tanning centres were in accordance with federal regulations.

“The disastrous situation concerning the safety of tanning centres shows the importance of joining forces and raising the alarm,” said the foundation in a statement. The new alliance is made up of 20 organisations, including the Flemish League against Cancer, consumer organisation Test-Aankoop and family services agency Kind en Gezin.

The alliance, which also focuses on broader UV prevention, listed four demands. It wants compulsory registration of the centres, increased and stricter monitoring, banning of misleading advertisements and publication of every centre’s inspection results. The foundation further emphasised that that the use of a tanning bed always increases the risk of skin cancer.
