UGent launches energy co-operative EnerGentIC
Ghent University’s new energy cluster will bring seemingly disparate fields together in the study and application of smart energy networks and applications
Bright idea
Some 100 UGent researchers met yesterday to discuss the future challenges in the energy sector. EnerGentIC will focus on the next generation of energy production technology like wind turbines and ocean tides, energy efficiency in buildings and industry, new forms of storage and the intelligent integration of renewable energy in networks.
EnerGentIC will work to improve collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches by strengthening the links between internal and external research groups – including those not involved in technology. The cluster organisation will encourage collaboration between research groups active in ICT, chemistry, bio-engineering, economy, law, electromechanics, materials and thermic systems.
The organisation will also concentrate on education and training. “Young engineers and young professionals should be aware of climate challenges and how they can contribute to the development of solutions,” said UGent in a statement.
EnerGentIC will also be a contact point for companies, governments, civil society, researchers and students and intends to boost the use of research findings and applications. “The transfer of technology and knowledge to the Flemish and international economy and to students is one of the ways to give something back to society,” stated UGent.
