Youngsters showcase inventions at massive science fair

Summary

Belgium’s primary and secondary school students are showing off their inventions and research at Wetenschaps¬EXPOSciences today in Brussels

Picnic on your bike

During the event Wetenschaps¬EXPOSciences, taking place today and tomorrow, about 860 youngsters will present their science projects to a broad public at Tour & Taxis in Brussels. The event is organised by the Free University of Brussels (VUB) in collaboration with the organisation Jeunesses Scientifiques de Belgique (JSB).

To encourage an interest in science and technology, VUB  and JSB challenged the Belgian students from both primary and secondary schools to design their own science projects. A jury with representatives from business and research will look for the most innovative projects.

Among the ideas for new inventions are a bicycle that can be turned into a picnic table and a fully-automatic inflatable fence to protect houses against floods.

The youngsters can also participate in hands-on activities during the event, including entering a simulator to experience what an astronaut feels in space, meeting a robot and carrying out experiments in a lab environment.

Free University of Brussels (VUB)

The VUB was established as a spin-off of the French-speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles in the 1960s. It’s an internationally oriented and liberal institution, and the only Dutch-speaking university in the capital.
Work - The VUB is the largest Dutch-speaking employer of the Brussels-Capital Region.
St V - Every year, students honour university founder Pierre Theodore Verhaegen in a festive, booze-filled “St V” march through the city.
Campus - The VUB is the only Dutch-speaking university with a small, American-style green campus.
