Get out there

From a cheesecake-baking contest in Flemish Brabant to orchard tours in Limburg, Flanders Today has pulled together an A-list of events and activities across the region, for both kids and adults.

Flemish Harbour Day
Go behind the scenes at the ports in Ghent, Zeebrugge, Ostend and Antwerp during a day of guided tours and activities. Register in advance for a tour of Antwerp’s new port building or a guided tour of the harbour area. In Ostend, the Belgian offshore wind platform will be open to visitors. 17 September, across Flanders; free

Opening of Thor Park
The former Waterschei coal mine in Genk is the latest industrial site to be redeveloped as a multifunctional office park and cultural centre organised around technology, renewable energy and innovation. During the opening weekend, visitors can take guided tours, try out e-bikes, take part in tech workshops or dance the night away. 16-17 September, André Dumontlaan 67, Genk; free

Hoeilaart Grape Festival
What started out as a festival showcasing the local grape harvest has evolved into a giant community celebration, with music, a cheesecake-baking contest, a flea market and used bike sale, entertainment for kids and more. 15-18 September, Hoeilaart (Flemish Brabant); free

Street market
For two days, Vlaamsesteenweg in the heart of the Sint-Katelijne district is the site of a flea market and pavement sale hosted by local merchants. Bike shop Cyclo BXL hosts a second-hand bike sale on Saturday, just in time for car-free Sunday the next day. 16-17 September 10.00-18.00, Vlaamsesteenweg, Brussels; free

Apple picking
Guaranteed fun for the whole family as you pick your own apples and pears right off the trees. If you plan to pick more than 100kg, you can reserve a spot at the Juice Mobile and have them pressed. Try some apple wine, pancakes or pie and take a guided tour of the orchard with the farmer. 17 September, 10.00-16.00, PJ Fruit, Kozenstraat 77, Stevoort (Hasselt); free
