Antwerp Central one of “world’s most beautiful stations”
The popular New York news site Mashable put Antwerp’s Central train station at the top of its list of 12 of the world’s most beautiful railway stations
Liège also on list of 12 sites
Antwerp’s station was built between 1895 and 1905 with a liberal use of iron and glass and a huge dome in the entryway. The station was a terminus until a massive construction project that lasted from 1998 to 2007 allowed trains to pass through on multiple levels. The reconstruction project won a Europa Nostra Award for the preservation of outstanding cultural heritage in 2011.
Also on Mashable’s list of 12 are the T-Centralen metro station in Stockholm, St Pancras Railway Station in London, Komsomolskyay metro station in Moscow and the Liège-Guillemins train station in Belgium.
