Are we really being overrun by spiders, yet again? The local spider association says not

Is there a spider invasion? asked De Morgen. Bonte shook his head. Elk jaar duikt er wel ergens een dergelijk bericht op – We get reports like this surfacing somewhere every year, he said. Het ene jaar zijn het er meer – One year there are more spiders; het andere zijn ze groter – the next year, they’re bigger.
Die beweringen zijn niet gestoeld op feiten – The facts don’t support these observations, he reasoned. Mensen dénken vaak dat er meer spinnen zijn – People often think there are more spiders, maar eigenlijk zijn ze gewoon vergeten hoeveel het er vorig jaar waren – but they’ve just forgotten how many there were last year. Élk jaar zijn er veel spinnen – There are lots of spiders every year.
Gone roamin’
The reason we see more of them at this time of year, Bonte says, is that it’s the mating season. De jongen die tijdens het vorige paarseizoen verwekt zijn – The baby spiders that were born during the previous mating season, hebben zich de afgelopen maanden gevoed met allerlei insecten die in huis zitten – have spent the last few months feeding on various insects in your house.
Eind augustus zijn ze volwassen – By the end of August they are adults, en zijn ze dus groter én bouwen ze grotere webben – and so they’re bigger, and they build bigger webs.
En dan trekken de mannetjes erop uit – And that’s when the males start roaming around. De wijfjes blijven ter plaatse en de mannetjes gaan op stap door het huis om andere wijfjes te vinden – The females stay put while the males roam the house in search of other females.
Terwijl de spinnen de afgelopen maanden dus verscholen zaten in hoekjes en kiertjes – Whereas the spiders spent the previous months hidden in nooks and crannies, verlaten ze nu hun schuilplaats – they’re now coming out of their hiding places.
So should you be thinking about getting rid of the spiders? Wie niet van spinnen houdt – Anyone who doesn’t like spiders, denkt toch beter twee keer na alvorens hij de beestjes doodt of buiten zet – should think twice before he kills the little critters or puts them outside, says Bonte.
Spinnen zijn namelijk nuttige dieren – Spiders are actually useful creatures. En zonder spinnen had u wellicht veel meer vliegen in huis – And without spiders you’d have a lot more flies in your house.
And it’s not even helping the spider that much. Een spin buiten zetten mag overigens een diervriendelijke oplossing lijken – You might think that putting a spider outside is an animal-friendly thing to do, maar de overlevingskansen in zijn nieuwe habitat zijn niet heel groot – but its survival chances in the new habitat are not very good.
So don’t believe any of those stories you hear about spiders. Someone is spinning a web of lies.
