    As a youngster, Annick De Ridder called for a party congress on immigrants' right to vote, an issue that put Open VLD under heavy pressure. The 2004 congress is legendary, as it nearly moved the then-prime minister Guy Verhofstadt to tears. De Ridder's political talent was instantly recognised, and soon after the Antwerp lawyer entered the Flemish Parliament at the age of 25.

"We started Art Trek as an art show because we felt there was a void in the art landscape for young illustrators who don't work around conceptual art but prefer to draw," she explains. "I just felt there was something missing. So we decided to do our own exhibition, and it snowballed into an annual event."

    Top Flemish businessman Karel Vinck has won his appeal in an asbestos-related court case being conducted in Catania, Italy. Vinck had been sentenced to three years suspended for failing to protect employees against the dangers of asbestos when he was manager of a factory in Sicily owned by Eternit, the roofing materials company, in the 1970s.

    In 1998, when child rapist Marc Dutroux escaped from the Neufchâteau courthouse in Wallonia, Stefaan De Clerck (CD&V) and Johan Vande Lanotte (SP.A) resigned immediately. Leaving the locks open for Dutroux was not their personal fault, but, as the ministers for justice and internal affairs, Dutroux's little walk in the woods fell under their responsibility.
