Antwerp to scrap night-bus service this month
Summary
Antwerp will shut down its late-night service on Friday and Saturday nights because of a lack of users, said De Lijn
Do you agree with De Lijn's decision to stop its night bus service in Antwerp because of a lack of users?
Alternatives sought
De Lijn will bring an end to the night bus service in Antwerp on 27 June, the Flemish public transport authority announced. The fares raised from users are not enough to cover the costs of running the service, said De Lijn, even taking into account the contribution paid by the municipalities.
The service was set up in 2007 and consists of nine lines that operate on Friday and Saturday nights until 4.00. One problem was that most journeys begin and end in the city, with very few reaching the surrounding municipalities – the main reason for the establishment of the network.
De Lijn said it was prepared to talk to municipal authorities and the taxi sector to explore alternative possibilities and is looking at a possible combi-ticket for public transport and taxi, as well as collective taxi schemes.
