Ports of Antwerp and Montreal renew collaboration

Summary

The port of Antwerp has renewed its working agreement with Montreal’s port, which share many similarities and have improved relations between industries in both regions

Infrastructure similarities

The port authorities of Antwerp and Montreal signed a new agreement this week to extend their collaboration for another three years. The renewal was signed during a visit by the minister of transport and maritime strategy of Quebec province, Jean D’Amour. The agreement extends the pact originally signed in 2013.

The two ports share many similarities, a spokesperson for the port of Antwerp said in a statement. Both are located inland on a major river and serve a hinterland with much purchasing power and concentration of industry. Canada, and North America in general, is one of Antwerp’s main partners, a situation likely to become even more important with the implementation of the trade agreement between Canada and the EU due to be ratified in 2016.

Since 2013, relations have grown stronger, with reciprocal visits by delegations led by Marc Van Peel, Antwerp alderman for port matters, and Quebec prime minister Philippe Couillard. “Quebec is more ready than ever to make its expertise, well developed infrastructure and huge expanding economic market available to its European partners,” Couillard said during his recent visit.
