A survey shows that students perceive the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) as Flanders’ best university and Ghent University (UGent) as its most progressive. Study bureau Ipsos questioned 1,500 students in the last year of general education at secondary schools across all the Flemish provinces.

Either UGent or KU Leuven was the top choice of university of one in three respondents. Hasselt University (UHasselt) and the Free University of Brussels (VUB) were each the favourite of about one in 20, while Antwerp University (UAntwerp) was the first choice for one in 10.

About 55% of teenagers who want to study at UGent actually believe a degree from KU Leuven is more valuable. Only about 7% of the students attracted to KU Leuven felt the same way about a degree from UGent.

The majority of students believe that KU Leuven is the most challenging university, while UAntwerp is seen as the easiest to get a diploma from.

UGent is perceived as the most progressive university, offering the most freedom to students. When respondents were asked which university is the most “boring”, UGent was named the least often. “We contribute to and profit from the young and trendy image of the city of Ghent,” UGent spokesperson Stephanie Lenoir told De Morgen.
