€55 million for youth treatment and residential centres
Flanders’ welfare minister has earmarked an extra €55 million for the construction and renovation of care facilities for troubled youth
A place to call home
The funding will be focused on facilities such as residential homes and day centres that serve troubled children and young people. These include youngsters with behavioural problems or who have been removed from their homes temporarily or permanently.
Among the facilities earmarked for help is De Wiekslag in Alken, Limburg, which will build a new campus to accomodate 20 young people. Another project will create a centre for 60 children and young adults in Roeselare, West Flanders.
“Over and above quality support, the availability of infrastructure tailored to the needs of the target group is of major importance,” Vandeurzen said. “Suitable buildings and the way space is organised are important to the children and young people concerned, and to the way that support can be carried out.”
