The ranking looks at more than 4,000 universities to develop the ranking. The list takes into account the number of papers published, the number of top publications and the proportion of publications with international co-authors.
UGent’s faculty tops the list of the world’ best 200 departments in veterinary sciences. The university also achieved a fifth place in food science and technology and was ranked ninth in agricultural sciences.
The University of Leuven (KU Leuven), meanwhile, made the top 10 in nursing, ranking seventh. It did even better in library and information sciences, coming in fifth. American universities dominate the ranking, but China, the UK and the Netherlands also score well.
The Shanghai ranking also develops an annual list of the world’s 500 best overall universities, which will be announced later this summer. Last year, UGent ranked 62nd and KU Leuven 93rd.
