Black culture crosses Atlantic divide for Afropolitan

Summary

Bozar’s brilliant celebration of black culture tops our agenda this week, with Museum Night and the Chocolate Salon not far behind

Afropolitan

For the second time, Bozar celebrates and investigates black culture from around the world. The multi-disciplinary festival’s theme this year is Black Artlantic, based on the book Black Atlantic by British historian Paul Gilroy that introduces the concept of a black culture that transcends the borders and nationalities separated by an ocean.

Hence, American and European artists with African roots have the floor, including Julie Dash (pictured), who will talk about her cult film Daughters of the Dust, Belgium’s own Baloji, a musician-turned-short filmmaker, and an exhibition of work by the great Kehinde Wiley, who made headlines this month with his riveting portrait of former US president Barack Obama. 23-25 February, Bozar, Ravensteinstraat 23, Brussels

Museum Night Fever

In what has become one of the hottest tickets of the year, Museum Night Fever is back in the capital. Aside from how cool it is to wander around some of Brussels most venerable institutions after-hours, visitors discover a whole new rockin’ side to them. No fewer than 27 museums are open until 2.00 for the occasion, some with food and drinks, some with massive performances, some with a little dancing and some with quirky activities. You can also visit any exhibitions you see fit, with special guided tours offered in many of the venues. A shuttle bus takes you from one to the next, and an after-party at Zodiak keeps you out the sun comes up. 3 March, Across Brussels

Chocolate Salon

What respectable leader in the world of chocolate doesn’t have a Chocolate Salon? Certainly not Belgium. This annual event puts thousands of pralines and other chocolate-smothered delicacies on the tasting menu, but it also showcases top chocolate chefs and chocolate sculptures, as well as hosting pastry workshops and kids’ activities. Don’t miss the fashion show, where the models wear clothes fashioned from chocolate. You won’t see that in Switzerland. 2-4 March, Tour & Taxis, Havenlaan 86, Brussels
