Flanders Heritage Library wins Culture Award

Summary

Intermediary organisation praised for tearing down the walls between conservation institutions

Award is worth €12,500

Flemish culture minister Joke Schauvliege handed the Flemish Community Award for Cultural Heritage to the Flanders Heritage Library. The ceremony was held last week during the annual meeting of Het Groot Onderhoud (The Big Maintenance) in Bruges, which evaluates the relationship between the cultural heritage and tourism sectors. The Cultural Heritage Award is worth €12,500.

The Antwerp-based Flanders Heritage Library was established in 2008 as a network of six libraries: the heritage library in Antwerp,  the Bruges public library, the provincial library of Limburg and the university libraries of Antwerp, Ghent and Leuven. The jury praised the small intermediary organisation for tearing down the walls between different conservation institutions.

Last year, the Flanders Heritage Library launched the portal site Flandrica, with digitised material, from literary works to old cookbooks. Together with the Flemish Literature Fund, the network organisation also launched the pioneering crowdfunding project Boekensteun last week.
