Photo of the week: Easy does it

Summary

The 22-metre-high tree is ready for Brussels’ annual Winter Wonders, which kicks off next weekend

A worker eases the tremendous trunk of a Nordmann fir into its ‘stand’ on the Grote Markt in Brussels. The tree is placed in the same spot every year, where a deep hole awaits under the cobblestones.

The tree was cut down in Stavelot in Wallonia on Wednesday and placed in the Brussels square early on Thursday morning. It is 22 metres high and was donated by Stavelot’s mayor, who owns the property where the 60-year-old tree was felled.

The tree will be decorated with the colours of the Belgian flag and with the image of Manneken Pis, who this year is celebrating his 400th anniversary. It will be the centrepiece to a light show that will show in the square every half hour during the Winter Wonders holiday market.

Winter Wonders starts next Friday, 29 November and runs until 5 January.
