After losing on points in a major bout in New York City, Flemish boxer Delfine Persoon and her team are contesting the controversial verdict

Rematch on the cards?

Belgium’s boxing union has lodged a complaint following Delfine Persoon’s controversial defeat on points to Irish-American Katie Taylor in New York last weekend.

Persoon, a 34-year-old police officer from West Flanders, lost the WBC, WBO, WBA and IBF lightweight title reunification fight after two judges gave Taylor the victory 96-94 and the third scored it a draw. Many observers, including high-profile fellow boxers, Persoon’s manager and the sport’s federation in Belgium, felt Persoon should have been awarded the win at Madison Square Garden.

“The result of this fight was very wrong. Scandalous and outrageous,” the union said in a letter to the sport’s worldwide governing bodies. “We think that respect, honesty and fair play should play an important role in our sport. We demand honesty from our athletes and their entourage and that is exactly what we must show them ourselves. We hope therefore that the World Federation will consider supporting Delfine Persoon in this matter.”

Both women have spoken of their desire for a rematch.
