Photo of the week: In session
This week saw children going back to school, ministers holding their first council meetings and courts ushering in a new judicial year
My, what a busy week
Maes was busy on the day: He also spoke at the swearing-in of new legal court interns. That ceremony also takes place in courts across the country as hundreds of new interns take an oath to abide by the laws and regulations of the judicial system.
Last Monday was a big day in Belgium overall: It was also the start of the new school year, which saw 1.2 million children and teenagers head back to school. And traffic increased as everyone went back to commuting following the summer holiday.
Today, meanwhile, ministers of the Flemish government are holding their first council meeting since breaking for the summer. This is known as the Away Day, where the ministers meet at another location outside of parliament.
It was environment minister Joke Schauvliege’s turn to host Away Day, and she invited the group to the Meetjesland region of East Flanders, where she grew up. This morning, the ministers met in the Het Godshuis event and meeting centre in Sint-Laureins and are this afternoon heading to Ghent for a tour of the harbour on electric bicycles. The end of the day will find them at the Van Steenberge brewery in Evergem for a tour of the newly renovated business.
