Summary

Records were broken at the Belgian Swimming Championship, which helped determine who will go to the world championships and the next Olympics

Water, water everywhere

Belgian swimmer Lucas Gervais prepares for his 50m freestyle at the Belgian Swimming Championships last weekend. The event saw some records broken and sealed some swimmers’ chances of going to the world championships and the Olympics.

Gervais took fifth in the 50m freestyle, which was won by Jasper Aerents. Olympic silver medallist Pieter Timmers came third.

Timmers, who holds the Belgian record for the 100m freestyle (47.80), won silver in the same event in the Rio Olympics. Both he and Aerents are assured a spot in the world championship in July in South Korea.

Timmers is also assured of a spot on the Olympic team next summer in Tokyo, as is Valentine Dumont, who broke both the women’s 100m and 400m freestyle at the Belgian championships. She also holds the record for the 200m freestyle, set in 2017.
