Summary

Cynthia Bolingo Mbongo broke her own record - and Belgium's - at the European Indoor Athletics Championship in Glasgow

One-hundredth of a second

In a delightful display of good sportsmanship, Brussels athlete Cynthia Bolingo Mbongo embraces Swiss sprinter Lea Sprunger following the 400m race at last weekend’s European Indoor Athletics Championship in Glasgow.

It was Sprunger who crossed the finish line first, though that wasn’t clear to the naked eye. A photo finish confirmed that she won by one-hundredth of a second.

Bolingo Mbongo, 26, appeared to be happy enough with the silver medal in the event, with a time of 51.62. Not only was the time her personal best in the event, she broke the Belgian record.

The Belgian men’s 4 x 400m relay team did bring a gold medal home from the championships, with a time of 3:06.27, edging out Spain by five-hundredths of a second. All three of the Borlée brothers – Kevin, Dylan and Jonathan – ran in the event, together with Julien Watrin. It was Kevin, running fourth, who managed to gain on Spain and win the gold for Belgium.
