70 students allowed into medical studies after exams re-evaluated

Summary

The Council of State ruled that students will receive an extra point for an entrance exam question that was scrapped, meaning dozens of students who had failed can now go on to study dentistry or medicine

Exam questions contested

Seventy students who failed last summer’s entrance exam to study medicine or dentistry will be allowed to begin courses after being given an extra point on their exam scores due to a decision by the Council of State.

2,747 of the 3,331 candidates failed the exam in August. After a re-evaluation at the end of September, following complaints by students about three questions, 80 of those students were able to start the studies.

However, one student, Emma Cooreman from Sint-Katelijne-Waver in Antwerp province, filed a complaint with the Council of State. Cooreman was less than half a point short of passing the exam. She had answered one of the three disputed questions correctly but didn’t receive the point because the question had been scrapped.

The Council of State approved her request and decided that all students should get an additional point for the “non-valid question”, whether or not they answered it correctly.

Educational system

The Flemish educational system is divided into two levels: primary (age six to 12) and secondary school (12 to 18). Education is compulsory for children between the ages of six and 18.
Types - There are three educational networks in Flanders: the Flemish Community’s GO! network, and publicly funded education – either publicly or privately run.
Not enough space - In recent years, Flemish schools have been struggling with persistent teacher shortages and a growing lack of school spaces.
No tuition fees - Nursery, primary and secondary school are free in Flanders.
